I first met Tom as a student in one of his Marine Biology classes in the early 1980's. He not only taught me a lot of biology, but also how to be a teacher. In fact, I modeled my teaching style after his. We have been good friends for many years, and he is still an invaluable mentor with whom I enjoy discussing pedagogy and biology.
Tom is the author several books , including the Marine Biology Coloring Book and A Beachcomber's Guide to California Marine Life.
Tom contributed many of the "Spectacular Examples" photos on our animal phyla pages. Underwater photography is another of Tom's many talents.
